Overview

As an Enrolled Agent firm, we believe everyone deserves access to accurate tax information. If your tax situation is straightforward and your adjusted gross income is $89,000 or less, you may not need to pay for tax preparation at all.

The IRS offers several free filing options, and this guide will help you find the right one. We would rather point you to a free option that works for your situation than have you pay for services you do not need.

If your situation turns out to be more complex, we are here to help.

IRS Free File: Guided Software

If your adjusted gross income (AGI) is $89,000 or less for the 2025 tax year, you qualify for IRS Free File guided software. This is the most user-friendly free option, offering step-by-step preparation similar to paid tax software.

AGI Limit: $89,000 or Less

About 70% of U.S. taxpayers qualify for Free File guided software. Federal returns are completely free. Some partners also include free state returns.

8 Trusted IRS Partners

The IRS partners with 8 tax software companies to provide free guided preparation:

1040Now
Drake (1040.com)
ezTaxReturn.com
FileYourTaxes.com
On-Line Taxes
TaxAct
TaxHawk (FreeTaxUSA)
TaxSlayer

How to Get Started

  • Go to irs.gov/freefile and use the "Find a Trusted Partner" tool
  • Each partner sets its own eligibility criteria (age, state, military status, income)
  • Federal returns are always free; some partners include free state returns

Note: IRS Direct File was suspended for 2026. The 8 Free File partners listed above remain available for the current filing season.

Free File Fillable Forms

If your income exceeds $89,000 or you simply prefer to fill out your own forms, Free File Fillable Forms are available to anyone regardless of income. These are electronic versions of IRS paper forms that you can complete and e-file at no cost.

Key Details

  • Available to anyone regardless of income
  • Electronic version of IRS paper forms
  • No guided preparation - you must know what forms to file
  • Does not include state returns

Fillable Forms are best for people who are comfortable preparing their own returns and know exactly which forms and schedules they need. If you are unsure about what forms to file, the guided software or in-person VITA help may be a better fit.

VITA and TCE Programs

If you prefer in-person help, the IRS sponsors two free tax preparation programs staffed by trained volunteers at community centers, libraries, and schools across the country.

VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)

  • Free for AGI $67,000 or less
  • Available to people with disabilities

TCE / AARP Tax-Aide

  • No income limit
  • Specializes in retirement-related tax issues
  • Also prepares state returns at no cost
  • Run in partnership with AARP Foundation
