How to File Your Taxes for Free: IRS Free File Guide (2026)
The IRS offers several ways to file your federal tax return at no cost. This guide covers every free option available for the 2026 filing season and helps you find the right one for your situation.
Overview
As an Enrolled Agent firm, we believe everyone deserves access to accurate tax information. If your tax situation is straightforward and your adjusted gross income is $89,000 or less, you may not need to pay for tax preparation at all.
The IRS offers several free filing options, and this guide will help you find the right one. We would rather point you to a free option that works for your situation than have you pay for services you do not need.
If your situation turns out to be more complex, we are here to help.
IRS Free File: Guided Software
If your adjusted gross income (AGI) is $89,000 or less for the 2025 tax year, you qualify for IRS Free File guided software. This is the most user-friendly free option, offering step-by-step preparation similar to paid tax software.
AGI Limit: $89,000 or Less
About 70% of U.S. taxpayers qualify for Free File guided software. Federal returns are completely free. Some partners also include free state returns.
8 Trusted IRS Partners
The IRS partners with 8 tax software companies to provide free guided preparation:
How to Get Started
- Go to irs.gov/freefile and use the "Find a Trusted Partner" tool
- Each partner sets its own eligibility criteria (age, state, military status, income)
- Federal returns are always free; some partners include free state returns
Note: IRS Direct File was suspended for 2026. The 8 Free File partners listed above remain available for the current filing season.
Free File Fillable Forms
If your income exceeds $89,000 or you simply prefer to fill out your own forms, Free File Fillable Forms are available to anyone regardless of income. These are electronic versions of IRS paper forms that you can complete and e-file at no cost.
Key Details
- Available to anyone regardless of income
